RIFT
A modern and comfortable chair design.
‘Rift’ takes the current trends in chair design and transforms it into something unique. The frame is made of powder coated steel, fitting into separate wood pieces, and topped with a leather upholstered seat. The two back pieces of wood are held together with two metal pieces, creating a wave effect with a small ‘rift’ in the middle. The style is extremely versatile, and it is possible to use in many different settings. I like the combination of curves and more linear geometry, as well as something about a design that seems ‘not quite right,’ but works nonetheless.
The inspiration for ‘Rift’ comes from the idea to create a piece of furniture that plays with the shapes and abnormalities found in nature and how those unique aspects can be harnessed into a design. The ebbing and flowing of wood as well as canyons interested me as a form, and led me to experiment with this idea. The body and antlers of a deer also served as an inspiration, and led me to think about how this combination could be used in a domestic setting.
